What bad credit means to a lender
Bad credit isn't one thing. To a lender it could mean a missed payment or two, a default that's since been paid, a court judgment, a past bankruptcy or debt agreement, or simply a thin file with very little history on it. Each is treated differently, and so is how long ago it happened.
The big banks tend to say no quickly. Specialist lenders look further. They weigh up what happened, what you've done since and whether you can comfortably afford the repayments now. That's the part of the market we compare.
Credit scores, in plain numbers
Your credit score is a number the credit reporting bodies work out from your file. Each uses its own scale. Equifax's runs from 0 to 1,200:
| Equifax band | Score |
| Excellent | 853 to 1,200 |
| Very good | 735 to 852 |
| Good | 661 to 734 |
| Average | 460 to 660 |
| Below average | 0 to 459 |
Source: Equifax, September 2026. Experian uses its own scale. Lenders also run their own checks, so a band is a guide, not a yes or no.
A low credit score on its own does not rule out a car loan. Lenders want to know why it is low and what has happened since, which is what the rest of this page covers.
You can get a free copy of your credit report every 3 months from Equifax and Experian. If something is wrong or out of date, you can ask them to fix it for free, so there is no need to pay anyone to do it.
What lenders look at
How recent it is
A paid default from four years ago reads very differently to one from last month. Time and a clean record since count for a lot.
Whether it's been paid
Paid or settled defaults are viewed more kindly than ones still outstanding. If you can clear a small default before applying, it's often worth doing.
Your income and stability
Steady employment or trading history shows the lender the problem is behind you.
Security and deposit
A secured loan, like a car loan, is easier to get than an unsecured one because the lender has the asset to fall back on. A deposit helps too. See secured vs unsecured loans.
Bad credit and car loans
A car loan is one of the easier loans to get with bad credit, because the car secures it. If the loan is not repaid, the lender has the car to fall back on, so it can say yes when it would say no to an unsecured loan.
The cars lenders prefer
Newer, lower kilometre, mainstream cars that are easy to resell. Older, very expensive or heavily modified cars narrow the field.
A deposit helps
Even a small deposit or a trade-in lowers what you borrow and shows you can save.
Dealer or private sale
A dealer can only offer the lenders on its own finance desk. We compare specialist lenders across our panel, and some of them fund private sales too. See car loans.
Who may say yes
Specialist lenders
Non-bank lenders that look at the story behind the file, not just the score. Their rates are higher, and they are often the way back to a mainstream lender later.
A guarantor
A family member with good credit can guarantee the loan, which can open up more lenders and a better rate. It is a serious ask. If you do not pay, the lender can chase them for the whole debt, and if they have offered their home as security, it is at risk. They should get independent legal advice before they sign.
What to expect
A higher rate, for now
Specialist lenders price in the risk, so expect a higher rate than a clean-file borrower. Making every repayment on time rebuilds your file.
Refinancing later
Once your file has improved, moving to a sharper rate is a realistic next step. See refinancing.
Honesty helps
Tell us everything up front. Surprises found on your file during the application cause more knockbacks than the issues themselves.
Protect your file while you shop
Don't apply everywhere
Every application leaves an enquiry on your credit file, and a string of them makes the next lender nervous. Compare first, then apply once.
Get your own report
You can get your credit report free from the credit reporting bodies. Check it for errors before you apply. Mistakes are more common than people think.
A simple plan for the next few months
- Get your free credit reports and fix any errors
- Pay any small defaults, or set up a payment plan. A paid default stays on your file but shows as paid
- Pay every bill on time
- Hold off on new credit applications
- Put a deposit together
None of it is quick, but each month of it shows a lender the problem is behind you.
Bad credit finance questions
Can I get a car loan with bad credit?
Often, yes. A car loan is secured against the vehicle, which makes lenders more willing. The rate will reflect your history, and a deposit improves your chances. See car loans.
Can I get finance after bankruptcy?
Yes, although most lenders want you to be discharged first, and the options grow the longer it's been. Some specialist lenders will consider recently discharged borrowers with steady income.
Will you do a credit check?
Getting a quote doesn't touch your credit file. A credit check only happens when you decide to apply, and we go to the lender most likely to say yes first.
Can I improve my credit score before applying?
Yes. Clear any small outstanding defaults, keep every repayment on time, close credit cards you don't use and fix any errors on your report. Our guide to credit scores and interest rates explains what moves the needle.
What if I've already been knocked back?
A knockback from one lender says little about the next. It does mean you should stop applying, because more enquiries make it harder. Talk to us before you try again.
What credit score do I need for a car loan?
There is no single number. Each lender sets its own rules and looks past the score: how recent the problems are, your income and the car. The lower the score, the higher the rate and the more a deposit helps.
Will a guarantor help?
It can. A guarantor with good credit can open up more lenders and a better rate, but they become responsible for the whole debt if you do not pay. See "Who may say yes" above.
Is dealer finance easier with bad credit?
Not necessarily. A dealer can only offer the lenders on its own finance desk, and a knockback there still leaves an enquiry on your file. Compare first, then apply once.
