A Business Line of Credit for the Lumpy Months

A limit the business can draw on, pay back and draw again. Interest only on what you use, so the quiet months cost less than the busy ones.

What we sort out for you

Lines of credit vary more than most business products. We find the one whose limit, fees and review terms fit how your cash actually moves.

Secured or unsecured
Property security usually means a bigger limit and a lower rate. Unsecured lines are faster and smaller. We show you both.
Sizing the limit
Big enough to cover your toughest month, not the biggest number a lender will approve. Unused limit can still carry a fee.
Fees on the full limit
Many facilities charge a line fee on the whole limit, drawn or not. We put that next to the rate so you see the real cost.
Low doc and newer ABNs
Some lenders set a limit off bank statements and trading history rather than full financials. We know which ones.
The annual review
Most lines are reviewed each year. We explain what the lender will look at, so the review is not a surprise.
When a term loan fits better
If you need one fixed amount for one job, a term loan is often cheaper. We will tell you straight.

How a business line of credit works

A business line of credit is a facility with an approved limit. The business draws money when it needs it, pays it back when cash comes in, and can draw again without a new application. Interest is charged on the balance you are using, not on the whole limit.

It is built for money that goes out and comes back: stock bought ahead of a busy season, wages before a big client pays, a supplier deal that needs cash this week. It is a poor fit for paying off a long-lived asset over years, because nothing forces the balance down. That job belongs to a term loan or equipment finance.

Who a line of credit suits

Seasonal businesses

Farms, tourism, retail and trades with a busy and a quiet season. Draw in the lead-up, repay when the money lands.

Businesses waiting on customers

The work is done and invoiced, but payment takes 30 to 60 days. A line covers the gap while you wait.

Stock-heavy businesses

Buying stock in bulk or ahead of a price rise, then selling it down over the following months.

Growing businesses

Taking on bigger jobs that need materials and labour paid for before the first progress payment arrives.

Steady, established traders

A buffer for a repair, a late payer or an opportunity, without stopping to apply each time.

Property owners

Directors who own property can often secure a larger limit at a lower rate. It is a serious commitment, so it deserves a proper conversation.

What lenders look at

Trading history

Most lenders want at least 12 months of trading, and the larger limits usually need two years or more. Newer businesses can still get a smaller limit, generally at a higher rate.

Bank statements and turnover

The limit is often set against turnover and how money moves through the account. Steady deposits help. Dishonours and an account that sits at its limit do not.

Financials and the ATO

Larger facilities ask for financials, tax returns and BAS. An unpaid tax debt with no payment plan in place is one of the fastest ways to a no.

Security

An unsecured line relies on the business and a director's guarantee. A secured line is usually backed by property, which lifts the limit and lowers the rate but puts that property on the line.

The directors

Personal credit files are checked, and most small business facilities need a personal guarantee from the directors.

Typical terms

Common ranges, not promises. Every lender sets its own policy.

  • Limit: from a few thousand dollars on smaller unsecured lines to six figures and more with property behind it.
  • Interest: charged only on the drawn balance, usually calculated daily and debited monthly.
  • Fees: an establishment fee is common, and many lines also carry a line fee or facility fee on the full limit. Some charge a fee each time you draw instead.
  • Repayments: some lines only ask for the interest each month, others need a set portion of the balance repaid. Check which one you are signing.
  • Term: most are ongoing facilities reviewed every year or so rather than loans with an end date. Some unsecured lines run for a fixed period and then need renewing.
  • Access: once the line is set up, drawing on it is usually quick, often the same or next business day depending on the lender.

An example

Illustrative only. A $100,000 line of credit at an example rate of 12.00% p.a., interest calculated daily, fees not included.

What you drawFor how longInterest
$20,00030 days$197
$40,00060 days$789
$100,00090 days$2,959

Interest follows the balance, so the quiet months cost very little. The catch is the fees. If this facility also charged a line fee of, say, 1% a year on the full limit, that would add about $1,000 a year whether you drew a dollar or not. On a line you rarely touch, the fee can cost more than the interest.

These figures are illustrative only. They are not a quote, a current rate or an offer of credit. Your rate, fees and terms depend on the lender, the security and your circumstances.

Line of credit, overdraft or term loan?

Line of credit

A separate facility with its own limit. Draw, repay, redraw. Best for money that goes out and comes back within months.

Business overdraft

A limit attached to your transaction account, so the account can go below zero. A similar idea, usually tied to the bank you already use.

Term loan

One lump sum, repaid on a schedule until it is gone. Best for a fixed cost like a fit-out or an expansion. See business term loans.

What to have ready

  • ABN, company details and the directors' details
  • Six to twelve months of business bank statements
  • Recent BAS, plus financials or tax returns for larger limits
  • A rough idea of the limit you need and what it is for
  • Property details if you are looking at a secured line
  • A list of current business debts and their repayments
  • Your ATO account position, including any payment plan in place

Line of credit questions

Do I pay interest on the whole limit?

No. Interest is charged on the amount you have drawn. Many facilities do charge a line fee on the full limit, though, so an unused limit is rarely free.

Can I get a line of credit without property?

Yes. Unsecured lines are common for established businesses. Limits are smaller and rates higher than a property-secured line, and a director's guarantee is usually required.

How is the limit worked out?

Lenders look at turnover, how cash moves through your accounts, existing debts and, for secured lines, the property value. Many unsecured lenders set the limit relative to monthly turnover.

Is a line of credit the same as an overdraft?

They are close cousins. An overdraft sits on your transaction account, while a line of credit is usually a separate facility you draw from. The costs and the annual review work in much the same way.

What happens at the annual review?

The lender looks at the business again, usually through recent statements and financials. It can keep the limit, raise it, reduce it or, less often, ask for it to be repaid. Clean statements and a balance that comes down regularly help.

Can I use it to buy equipment?

You can, but a long-lived asset is usually cheaper on equipment finance, with a lower rate and a schedule that pays it off. If you buy gear regularly, see the equipment line of credit.

How fast can I get one?

Smaller unsecured lines can move within a few days once the paperwork is in. Secured lines take longer, because property has to be valued and documents drawn up.

Will applying affect my credit score?

Comparing here does not touch your credit file. A formal application does involve a credit check, and we tell you before that happens.

Looking at something else? See business term loans for a one-off amount, invoice and debtor finance if the gap is unpaid invoices, the equipment line of credit for regular machinery purchases, or business loans for the full picture.

Need one fixed amount instead?

If the money is for one job with a known cost, a term loan is usually cheaper and comes with a clear end date.
