Which calculator to use

Loan repayment

The general one. Put in an amount, a rate and a term and see the repayment weekly, fortnightly or monthly.

Mortgage

Price less deposit, with the loan to value ratio worked out for you and a flag if you are heading into lenders mortgage insurance.

Affordability

Works backwards from what is left after your living costs and existing repayments, assessed at a rate higher than the one you are quoted.

Car loan

Price less deposit or trade-in, with an optional balloon, so you can see what a lump sum at the end does to the repayment now.

Debt consolidation

Three current debts against one new loan. Shows the monthly difference and how much interest you would leave behind.

Interest rate comparison

The same loan at two rates, side by side, with the gap in the monthly figure and over the whole term.

How to read the numbers

Every calculator here gives an estimate based on what you type in. The figures are a guide, not a quote and not an offer of credit. Your real rate and repayment depend on the lender, the product, the security and your circumstances, and are only confirmed in a formal offer.

What the figures include

Principal and interest over the term you choose, calculated the way lenders calculate them, in arrears.

What they do not include

Fees and charges, which vary by lender and product. On the mortgage calculator they also leave out lenders mortgage insurance, stamp duty and the costs of settling.

Why the rate is a starting point

Each calculator opens on a rate tied to a credit score band, because credit history moves pricing more than almost anything else. Tap a different band, or type the rate you have actually been quoted, and everything updates.

What moves the repayment

  • The rate. The obvious one. On a $50,000 loan over five years, a one per cent difference is worth a few hundred dollars a year.
  • The term. A longer term drops the repayment and raises the total cost. Shorter is cheaper overall if the cash flow allows it.
  • The deposit or trade-in. Less borrowed, less interest, and on some deals a wider list of lenders willing to look at it.
  • A balloon or residual. Lowers the repayment now, leaves a lump sum owing at the end. It suits people who replace the asset regularly.
  • Repayment frequency. Paying weekly or fortnightly brings the balance down a little faster than paying monthly.
  • Fees. Establishment and monthly fees sit outside the calculators, so check them against the rate before you decide which offer is cheaper.

Calculator questions

Are these figures a quote?

No. They are estimates based on what you enter. Rates shown are indicative only, are not an offer of credit, and can change without notice. Fees and charges apply.

Will using a calculator affect my credit score?

No. Nothing here touches your credit file. A credit enquiry only happens if you apply and give the go ahead.

What rate should I put in?

If you have been quoted one, use it. If not, tap the credit score band that sounds like you and the rate fills itself in. See how your credit score affects your rate.

Why is my bank's number different?

Usually fees, or a comparison rate rather than the plain interest rate. A comparison rate folds some fees in, so it sits higher. See comparison rate versus interest rate.

What does the affordability calculator assume?

It takes what is left after your living costs and existing repayments, leaves some of that spare rather than spending all of it, and tests the loan at a rate well above the one you are quoted. Lenders do something similar, which is why their number is lower than a plain repayment sum suggests.

Should I take the balloon?

It depends on whether you need the cash flow now or the lower total later, and on what the asset will be worth at the end. Run it both ways here first. See balloon payments explained.

Can I see the numbers for my exact situation?

Yes. Send the details through and we will compare the panel properly, rather than you working off an estimate.

Every loan page has its own calculator with sensible figures already filled in. Try car loans, business vehicle finance, equipment finance or home loans.
