What we sort out for you

Invoice finance works very differently from one funder to the next. We match you to the one that suits your customers, your invoices and how much control you want to keep.

Whole ledger or single invoices
Fund every invoice through an ongoing facility, or just the one big invoice that is holding things up.
Confidential or disclosed
Keep collecting from your customers yourself, or hand collections to the funder. We explain what each means for your customers.
Funding that grows with sales
The more you invoice, the more you can draw. Unlike a fixed loan, the limit moves with the business.
Secured by your invoices
The money owed to you is the main security, so property is often not needed.
Clear on the fees
A discount fee on the money advanced plus a service fee is common. We set them out so you see the true cost.
Quick once it is running
Setting up takes some paperwork. After that, new invoices can usually be funded quickly.

How invoice and debtor finance works

Invoice finance lets a business borrow against invoices it has issued to other businesses but has not yet been paid for. The funder advances a large share of each invoice up front, commonly up to about 80 percent. When your customer pays, the funder takes back what it advanced plus its fees and passes the rest on to you.

Debtor finance is the same idea applied to the whole sales ledger. Instead of picking invoices one at a time, the facility funds your eligible invoices as they are raised, and the amount available rises and falls with your sales. Single invoice finance, sometimes called selective invoice finance, lets you fund only the invoices you choose, which suits a business with the occasional large customer.

You will also hear factoring and invoice discounting. With factoring, the funder usually manages collections and your customers pay the funder. With invoice discounting, you keep collecting and your customers may never know a funder is involved.

Who it suits

Wholesalers and distributors

Paying suppliers up front while customers take 30 to 60 days to pay.

Labour hire and recruitment

Wages go out every week, but clients pay monthly, and the gap grows as you win work.

Manufacturers

Materials and staff are paid for long before the finished order is invoiced and paid.

Transport and logistics

Fuel, wages and maintenance every week, with customers on long payment terms.

Construction subcontractors

Progress claims that take weeks to be paid. Some funders specialise in this, though many will not fund construction.

Fast-growing businesses

Sales growing faster than cash. The facility grows with the ledger instead of capping you at a fixed limit.

What funders look at

Who your customers are

Your customers' ability to pay matters as much as yours. Invoices to established, creditworthy businesses and government bodies are the easiest to fund.

Business to business sales

Invoice finance is built for invoices to other businesses. Sales to consumers are generally not eligible.

The quality of the ledger

Clean invoicing, clear payment terms and few disputes or credit notes. Invoices that are well overdue, often past 90 days, are usually excluded.

Customer concentration

If one customer makes up most of your sales, some funders cap how much of that customer's debt they will fund.

Your systems

Many funders connect to your accounting software, which speeds up setup and the funding of new invoices.

Typical terms

Common ranges, not promises. Every funder sets its own policy.

  • Advance: commonly up to about 80 percent of each eligible invoice, with the balance paid to you, less fees, when your customer pays.
  • Discount fee: an interest-style charge on the money you have drawn, usually calculated daily.
  • Service fee: a percentage of invoice value or a set monthly amount, to cover running the facility.
  • Contract: whole ledger facilities often have a minimum term and a notice period. Single invoice funding generally has no lock-in.
  • Security: the invoices themselves, often alongside a general security over business assets and a director's guarantee.
  • Limit: tied to your sales ledger, so it rises as the business invoices more.

An example

Illustrative only. A $50,000 invoice on 45 day terms, an 80 percent advance, an example discount fee of 12.00% p.a. and an example service fee of 0.50% of the invoice.

What happensAmount
Cash advanced when you raise the invoice$40,000
Discount fee for 45 days$592
Service fee$250
Paid to you when your customer pays$9,158

In total the business pays about $842 to have $40,000 in the bank roughly six weeks early. Whether that is good value depends on what the cash does in the meantime. Taking a supplier's early payment discount or saying yes to a big order can be worth far more than the fee.

These figures are illustrative only. They are not a quote, a current rate or an offer of credit. Fees, advance rates and terms depend on the funder, your customers and your circumstances.

Invoice finance, line of credit or term loan?

Invoice finance

The limit follows your sales and is secured by your invoices. Built for the gap between invoicing and being paid.

Line of credit

A set limit backed by the business or property. Flexible in what it pays for, but it does not grow with your sales. See the business line of credit.

Term loan

One fixed amount for one purpose, repaid on a schedule. See business term loans.

What to have ready

  • An aged receivables report from your accounting software
  • A customer list with payment terms
  • Recent BAS and business bank statements
  • Company and director details
  • Sample invoices and any customer contracts
  • Details of any existing finance with security over business assets

Invoice finance questions

Will my customers know?

Not necessarily. With confidential invoice discounting you keep collecting and your customers pay as usual. With factoring, the funder handles collections and your customers will know.

Is invoice finance the same as debtor finance?

The terms overlap. Debtor finance usually means a facility over your whole sales ledger. Invoice finance is the wider term, and includes funding single invoices.

What happens if a customer does not pay?

Most Australian facilities are with recourse, meaning the business is responsible if a customer does not pay, and the unpaid invoice may need to be bought back or replaced. Some funders offer credit protection at extra cost.

Do I need property as security?

Usually not. The invoices are the main security, often alongside a general security over the business and a director's guarantee.

Can I fund just one invoice?

Yes. Single invoice finance lets you choose which invoices to fund, with no ongoing facility. It tends to cost more per invoice than a whole ledger facility.

How fast is the money?

Setting up a facility takes some time, because the funder reviews your customers and your ledger. Once it is running, new invoices can often be funded within a day or two.

Can a newer business use it?

Often, yes. Because the funding leans on your customers' ability to pay, some funders work with businesses that are too young for a standard business loan.

Does it work for construction?

Sometimes. Progress claims and retentions are harder to fund, and many funders avoid them. A few specialise in construction, so it is worth asking.
