An Equipment Line of Credit, Approved Before You Buy

A pre-approved limit for machinery, trucks and vehicles. Buy the next piece of gear when the job needs it, without starting a fresh application every time.

Takes about 3 minutes. No credit check to get a quote.

What we sort out for you

An equipment limit only helps if it is set up around how you actually buy. We find the lender whose facility, structures and approvals fit your fleet.

One approval, many purchases
The business is assessed once. Each new machine is then a quick drawdown against the limit, not a full application.
Ready for auction day
Pre-approved funds mean you can bid knowing the money is there, and settle quickly when the hammer falls.
Chattel mortgage, lease or rental
Each purchase can be written in the structure that suits it. We map out what each one does for tax and the balance sheet.
Limits that refresh
On many facilities the limit tops back up as earlier contracts are paid down, so it keeps working year after year.
New, used and private sale
Dealer, auction or a private seller. We check how each lender treats the asset types and ages you buy.
Sized for the plan
We work the limit back from the gear you expect to buy over the next year or two, not the biggest number on offer.

How an equipment line of credit works

An equipment line of credit, sometimes called an equipment finance facility or an asset finance limit, is an approved amount set aside for buying business equipment. The lender assesses the business once and agrees a limit. When you find the machine you want, the purchase is written as its own contract under that limit, usually a chattel mortgage or a lease, with its own term and repayments.

The difference from a general business line of credit is that the money is tied to equipment, and each purchase is secured against the asset being bought. That security is why the rates tend to sit well below an unsecured line of credit. As the contracts are repaid, many facilities restore the limit, so the business can keep buying without going back through a full application.

Who it suits

Civil and earthmoving contractors

Excavators, loaders, rollers and the trucks and floats that move them, often bought as contracts are won.

Transport operators

Adding prime movers, rigids and trailers to the fleet through the year rather than all at once.

Farmers

Tractors, headers and spray rigs bought at clearing sales, where having funds approved in advance matters.

Trades with a growing crew

A new ute and tools each time someone joins, without a fresh application for every vehicle.

Auction buyers

Machinery sold under the hammer needs fast settlement. A pre-approved limit lets you bid with certainty.

Hire and rental businesses

Fleets that turn over regularly, where replacing gear is part of how the business runs.

What lenders look at

Trading history and financials

Facilities are usually offered to established businesses, often with two years of trading and full financials. The lender wants to see the business can carry several contracts at once.

Your track record with equipment

A history of paying equipment finance on time, especially with the same lender, carries real weight and can lift the limit.

The kinds of assets

Lenders are most comfortable with mainstream machinery and vehicles that hold their value and resell easily. Specialised or older gear may sit outside the facility or need its own approval.

Existing commitments

Every current loan and lease counts against what the business can carry, including ones with other lenders.

The directors

Credit files are checked, and personal guarantees are standard for most private companies.

Typical terms

Common ranges, not promises. Every lender sets its own policy.

  • Limit: set around what you plan to buy, from a modest amount for a small fleet to several million dollars for larger operators.
  • Each purchase: its own contract, commonly one to seven years, with a balloon or residual available on many.
  • Structures: chattel mortgage, finance lease, operating lease or rental, chosen purchase by purchase. See chattel mortgage, lease or rental.
  • Rate: set for each contract when it is written, based on the asset, the term and market rates at the time.
  • Review: facilities are usually reviewed every year or so, using updated financials.
  • Fees: expect establishment costs on each contract, and on some facilities a fee for the facility itself. Ask what is charged per drawdown.

An example

Illustrative only. A $250,000 equipment facility, with each purchase written over five years at an example rate of 9.00% p.a., no balloon, fees not included.

PurchaseRepaymentLimit left
Skid steer, $60,000$1,246 a month$190,000
Tipper trailer, $45,000$934 a month$145,000
Excavator, $90,000$1,868 a month$55,000

Each machine has its own repayment and its own end date, and together these three come to about $4,048 a month. On many facilities, the limit frees back up as those contracts are paid down, so the $55,000 left today grows again over the year.

These figures are illustrative only. They are not a quote, a current rate or an offer of credit. Your rate, fees and terms depend on the lender, the equipment and your circumstances. Repayments are calculated in arrears and rounded.

A facility, or one loan at a time?

An equipment facility

Best when you buy several pieces of gear a year, or buy at auction and want certainty before you bid.

One loan per purchase

Simpler when you buy one machine every few years. See equipment finance.

A general line of credit

Flexible, but usually dearer and not built for long-lived assets. Better for stock and wages. See the business line of credit.

What to have ready

  • Two years of financials and tax returns, if you have them
  • Recent BAS and business bank statements
  • A list of current equipment loans and leases
  • An outline of what you plan to buy over the next 12 to 24 months
  • Company and director details, including any property owned
  • Quotes or invoices for anything you are buying straight away

Equipment line of credit questions

Is an equipment line of credit the same as equipment finance?

It is equipment finance with the approval done in advance. Each purchase is still a chattel mortgage, lease or rental. The facility simply means you are not reapplying from scratch each time.

Do I pay anything if I do not use the limit?

Interest is only paid on contracts you actually write. Some facilities carry a fee for the facility itself, so ask what applies if the limit sits unused.

Can I use the limit at an auction?

Usually, and it is one of the best uses for it. Before sale day, check which asset types and ages the facility covers and how quickly the lender can settle.

Can I buy used or private sale equipment?

Yes, within the lender's policy on age and asset type. Older or unusual gear may need its own approval rather than sitting under the facility.

Does the limit go back up as I repay?

On many facilities, yes. As each contract is paid down, that room becomes available again. Others are set for a fixed period instead, so it is worth checking which you have.

Can I have a facility with more than one lender?

You can, though it is usually simpler and stronger to build a track record with one. We look at which lender suits the bulk of what you buy.

Do I need two years of financials?

Most facilities are aimed at established businesses with full financials. Newer businesses can still finance equipment one purchase at a time and build towards a facility.

Can I claim the GST?

On a chattel mortgage, a GST registered business can generally claim the GST on each purchase price. Leases and rentals are treated differently. Your accountant should confirm how it applies to you.

Buying just one machine?

For a one-off purchase, a single equipment loan is simpler and there is no facility to keep up.
