Straight answers on what it costs

We compare the panel, show you the real rate and the total cost, and tell you which lenders are worth applying to.

Secured or unsecured
If there's an asset behind it the rate usually drops. We check whether securing it is worth it before we go anywhere near a lender.
What it's actually for
Wedding, reno, travel or a tax bill. The purpose changes which lenders will look at it and how they price it.
Your credit file, read properly
A default or a thin file is not an automatic no. We know which lenders assess the story behind it rather than just the score.
Fixed or variable
Fixed locks the repayment in. Variable usually lets you pay it down early without penalty. We show you what each one costs.
One repayment instead of five
If you're juggling cards and store accounts, rolling them together is often the cheaper move. We do the sum either way.
The real cost, not the headline
Establishment fees, monthly fees and early payout costs folded in, so you're comparing apples with apples.

What is a personal loan?

A personal loan is a fixed amount borrowed and paid back over a set term, usually two to seven years. Most are unsecured, which means nothing is held against them. That is why the rate sits above a car loan but a long way under a credit card.

Because there is no asset behind it, the lender is pricing you rather than a thing. Your income, your credit file and what you already owe do most of the work. Two lenders can land thousands apart on the same application, which is the whole reason to compare before you apply rather than after.

Everything about personal loans

The questions we get asked most, answered properly rather than in sales copy.

Secured or unsecured, and which one do you want?

An unsecured personal loan is not tied to anything you own. Nothing can be repossessed if it goes wrong, you can spend it on what you like, and the approval is usually quicker. You pay for all of that in the rate.

A secured loan puts an asset behind it, most often a car. The lender has something to fall back on, so the rate drops, often by several percent. The trade-off is real: miss enough repayments and the asset is at risk.

If you own a decent car outright and the loan is sizeable, securing it is usually worth a look. For smaller amounts over a short term, the saving often is not big enough to bother tying up an asset.

Fixed or variable rate

A fixed rate locks the repayment in for the whole term. You know what leaves your account every month and it does not move. Most fixed personal loans limit or charge for early payout, so check that before you sign.

A variable rate can move up or down, but usually lets you throw extra at it whenever you want without penalty. If you expect a bonus, a tax return or a change in income, that flexibility can be worth more than the certainty.

There is no right answer. It depends entirely on whether you value a predictable budget or the ability to kill the loan early.

What the lender is actually looking at

Your income and how stable it is, your credit file, and your existing commitments. Unsecured lending is a judgement about you, so they look harder at all three than they would on a car loan.

A default or a thin file is not automatically a no. Lenders weight things very differently, and a knockback from one says almost nothing about the next. What does real damage is applying to several in a row, because every application leaves a mark.

That is the case for comparing first and applying once.

Getting the term right

Longer term, smaller repayment, more interest. Shorter term, bigger repayment, less interest. That is the whole trade.

The trap is stretching a loan out to make the monthly number look comfortable. A $20,000 loan over seven years instead of four can cost you thousands more for the privilege of paying less each month.

Pick the shortest term you can service comfortably, then sanity-check the repayment against a bad month rather than a good one.

Fees, and where they hide

An establishment fee of a few hundred dollars and a monthly account fee of ten or fifteen are both normal. They are also the reason the advertised rate is not the number that matters.

The comparison rate folds the known fees into a single figure, which makes it the honest one to compare on. It still will not include things that depend on your behaviour, like a late payment fee or an early payout charge.

Ask about early payout before you sign, not when you are trying to clear the loan.

Managing it once it is running

Set the repayment to land the day after you are paid. It sounds small, and it is the single most common reason a repayment is missed.

If the loan allows extra repayments without penalty, even a modest amount each month takes a real bite out of the interest, because it comes straight off the principal.

And if something changes, call the lender before a payment is missed rather than after. Hardship arrangements exist and are far easier to set up while the loan is still in good standing.

Before you sign, think about these

Six things worth a minute each. They are where the money actually moves.

What it is actually for

Some lenders price a debt consolidation differently to a holiday, and a few will not fund certain purposes at all. Worth knowing before you apply.

Your credit file

Pull your own report before you apply, it is free. Errors are more common than people expect and take time to fix.

The term

The monthly number is not the cost. Run the total over the full term before you decide a longer loan is more affordable.

Extra repayments

If you might pay it off early, check whether that is free. On a fixed loan it often is not.

Cover you do not need

Loan protection insurance gets offered with most personal loans. It is optional, and financing it means paying interest on it for the whole term.

One application, not five

Every application marks your file. Comparing first and applying once protects your position with the lender you actually want.

The costs that hide in the fine print

A low advertised rate can still be the dearer loan. These are the line items to hunt for before you commit:

  • Establishment and monthly fees. A $400 setup plus $15 a month adds about $1,300 to a five-year loan.
  • Early payout penalties. Some lenders charge you to finish early. If you expect to clear it ahead of time, that matters more than the rate.
  • Loan protection insurance. Optional, often bundled in at the application, and financed at your loan rate for the full term.
  • Late payment fees. They stack, and on some lenders they also trigger a mark on your credit file.
  • Comparison rate vs headline rate. The comparison rate folds the known fees in. It is the honest number.

Can you get one?

Who can apply

  • You are 18 or over
  • You are an Australian citizen or permanent resident. Some lenders also look at visa holders
  • You have regular income you can show
  • The repayments fit comfortably alongside what you already owe

What you will need

  • Your driver licence or passport
  • Recent payslips, or tax returns if you are self-employed
  • Bank statements
  • Details of your debts and living costs

Self-employed or low doc?

You can still get one. Most lenders want your last one or two tax returns. If yours are not up to date, some lenders offer low doc personal loans, which use BAS (business activity statements) and bank statements instead. A low doc loan can come with a higher rate, so compare on the comparison rate.

What rate will you get?

Personal loan rates are set for you, not for everyone. The advertised "from" rate goes to the strongest applicants. What you are offered depends on:

  • Your credit history
  • Your income and how stable it is
  • Whether the loan is secured, usually against a car
  • The amount and the term
  • What the money is for

Compare on the comparison rate, which includes the known fees. See comparison rate vs interest rate.

What happens next

  1. We compare and recommend. No credit check at this stage.
  2. You apply once, to the lender most likely to say yes.
  3. The lender checks your file and confirms your income and spending.
  4. Approval and contract. Most approvals come back within 24 hours.
  5. The money is paid out, to your account, or straight to the debts you are clearing.

If you are declined, stop and find out why before you try anywhere else. Another application means another enquiry on your file.

Personal loan or car loan?

Buying a car? A secured car loan is usually cheaper, because the car backs the loan. A personal loan suits a car a lender will not take as security, such as an older one, or when you want no conditions on the car at all. See car loans.

Personal loan questions

How much can I borrow?

It depends on your income, your living costs and what you already owe. Our guide to how much you can actually borrow walks through how lenders work it out.

What documents do I need?

ID, recent payslips or tax returns, bank statements and details of your debts. We tell you exactly what your lender wants before you apply.

Why use a broker for a personal loan?

A personal loan broker compares lenders for you and tells you which one is most likely to say yes before you apply. You apply once, instead of trying bank after bank and adding an enquiry to your credit file each time. See broker vs bank.

How fast can I get the money?

Most approvals come back within 24 hours. How soon the money lands after you sign depends on the lender and your bank.

Can I get one if I am self-employed?

Yes. Expect to show one or two tax returns, or BAS and bank statements with some lenders.

Is a car loan cheaper than a personal loan for a car?

Usually, because the car secures it. A personal loan wins when the car is too old for a secured loan or you want no conditions on it.
