What we sort out for you

New or used, a single unit or a run of them. We line up the options side by side, rates and repayments included.

Tippers to box trailers
Curtain-siders, floats, tippers and plant trailers. We take the spec to the lenders that fund it.
Usually the quickest approval
Trailers are simple assets and often the cheapest part of the fleet to fund. Approvals tend to move fast.
New, used or auction
Dealer, private sale or under the hammer. Auction buys need a lender that settles quickly. We sort that first.
Add it to existing gear
If you're already funding a truck, the trailer can often go on the same facility rather than a separate loan.
Chattel mortgage or lease
Each one lands differently on your books. We show you what both do to your cash flow.
The real cost, not the headline
Fees, term and early payout costs folded in, so you can see the total cost of each option.

How trailer finance works

Trailer finance is secured against the trailer, whether it's a tipper, a curtain-sider, a flat top, a plant float or a box trailer. Trailers hold their value and have few moving parts, so lenders generally see them as low-risk security.

Most are funded through the business with a chattel mortgage or finance lease, either on their own or alongside the truck that pulls them.

Who trailer finance suits

Transport operators

Semi-trailers, B-double sets and refrigerated vans for freight, from owner-drivers to fleets.

Earthmoving and civil

Tippers, dogs and plant floats that move material and machinery between sites.

Farmers

Stock crates, grain trailers and hay trailers. See agricultural finance for the rest of the farm gear.

Tradies

Tandem, box and equipment trailers for tools and small plant, usually funded through the business.

New operators

Newer ABNs with industry experience can still be approved, often with a deposit or a stronger file.

Growing fleets

Several trailers over time, where a facility with a limit saves applying for each one separately.

What we fund

Tippers and dogs

Tipper and dog trailers for earthmoving, quarry and civil work.

Curtain-siders and flat tops

Semi-trailers and B-double sets for general freight.

Plant floats and more

Low loaders and plant trailers for moving machinery, plus refrigerated, livestock and box trailers.

Trailer on its own, or with the truck

Funded with the truck

Buying a prime mover and trailer together? One loan covering both is usually simpler. See truck loans.

Funded on its own

Adding a trailer to a truck you already own is straightforward, and a clean repayment history on the truck helps.

Several trailers at once

If you're growing the fleet, a facility with a limit can be simpler than applying for each trailer separately.

Typical terms

Common ranges, not promises. Every lender sets its own policy.

  • Term: often one to seven years. Trailers last, so a longer term is common, though older trailers may be capped by age at the end of the loan.
  • Balloon: available with many lenders. Trailers tend to hold value well, but set it against a realistic resale figure.
  • Deposit: not always needed for established businesses. Newer operators and older trailers are more likely to need one.
  • Structure: chattel mortgage is the most common, with finance leases and rentals also available.
  • Paperwork: low doc on ABN, BAS and bank statements for established operators, full doc for larger amounts.

An example repayment

Illustrative only. An $80,000 tipper trailer at an example rate of 9.50% p.a., fees not included.

SetupRepaymentTotal repaid
Five years, no balloon$1,680 a month$100,809
Five years, $16,000 balloon$1,471 a month$104,247
Seven years, no balloon$1,308 a month$109,832

Both ways of lowering the repayment cost more overall. The balloon saves about $209 a month for about $3,400 more interest. Stretching to seven years saves about $373 a month for about $9,000 more. Which is better depends on how long you will keep the trailer and what your cash flow needs.

These figures are illustrative only. They are not a quote, a current rate or an offer of credit. Your rate, fees and terms depend on the lender, the trailer and your circumstances. Repayments are calculated in arrears and rounded.

What lenders look at

Time in business

Many lenders prefer around two years of ABN history, though newer operators with industry experience can still be approved.

The trailer

New or used, age, make and condition. Older trailers may need a deposit or a shorter term.

Your financials

Full doc, or low doc on your ABN, BAS and bank statements.

The work behind it

Contracts, regular customers or a steady run of work all help show the trailer will pay its way.

Registration and compliance

Heavy trailers come under heavy vehicle rules, and the lender will want the VIN, compliance details and registration, or a clear path to it, before it settles.

Buying a used trailer privately

Used trailers change hands privately all the time. The seller has to be the owner, the lender pays the seller directly, and a PPSR search on the VIN shows whether money is still owing against it. Run that search yourself before you pay a deposit, and match the VIN on the paperwork to the one stamped on the trailer. See what a lender checks on a private sale.

What to have ready

  • ABN, entity details and GST registration status
  • Recent BAS lodgements and business bank statements
  • Financials and tax returns if you are going full doc
  • Director ID and a current address
  • A quote or tax invoice for the trailer and anything fitted to it
  • The VIN, compliance details and registration papers on a used trailer
  • Details of the truck that will tow it

Trailer finance questions

Can I finance a used trailer?

Yes. Used trailers are funded all the time. The lender looks at age and condition, and some set a maximum age at the end of the loan.

Can I buy a trailer from a private seller?

Yes. The lender checks the seller owns it and that there's no money owing before it funds the sale.

Do I need a deposit?

Not always. Established businesses can often fund the full price. Newer businesses and older trailers are more likely to need one.

Can I get a trailer with a new ABN?

Often, yes, especially with industry experience behind you. Expect some lenders to ask for a deposit, full financials or a guarantor where the business has little history.

Can I get a balloon on a trailer?

Many lenders offer one. It lowers the repayment but leaves a lump sum at the end, so size it against what the trailer will realistically be worth then.

What about a trailer for personal use?

This page is about business trailers. For a caravan, a camper trailer or a trailer for the boat, see caravan loans or marine finance.

Which structure should I use?

Most operators use a chattel mortgage. A lease or rental can suit other situations, and your accountant can confirm what works for your tax position. See chattel mortgage, hire purchase, lease or rental.

Moving machinery? A plant float often goes hand in hand with excavator and yellow goods finance.
