Medical and Dental Loans When the Bill Cannot Wait

Surgery, dental work, IVF or other treatment that Medicare and your health fund do not fully cover. A fixed amount and a set repayment, so treatment does not wait while you save.

Takes about 3 minutes. No credit check to get a quote.

What we sort out for you

Health costs rarely arrive at a good time. We find a loan that covers the gap without adding stress, and we look at the provider's own payment options alongside it.

Start with the gap
We work from what Medicare and your health fund will pay, so you only borrow the out-of-pocket amount.
Provider plans compared
Many clinics offer payment plans. We put them next to a personal loan so you can see which costs less.
Fixed repayments
One set repayment over a term you choose, so you can plan around treatment and recovery time.
Ready before treatment
Approval and funding can be lined up ahead of the booking, so the procedure date does not slip.
Your finances, not your health
Lenders look at your income and credit file. You tell them what the loan is for, not your medical history.
Early payout
If a rebate or claim comes through later, many loans let you pay down the balance early. We check before you sign.

How a medical loan works

A medical loan is a personal loan used for health costs. You borrow a fixed amount, it is paid to you in one go, and you repay it over a set term, often one to five years. Most are unsecured, so nothing you own is tied to the loan.

Before borrowing, it is worth getting clear on the real out-of-pocket cost. Ask the provider for an itemised quote, then check what Medicare and your health fund will cover. Ask the clinic about its own payment plans too. Some are interest free for a short time, which can beat any loan if you can clear it in time.

What it can cover

Dental work

Implants, crowns, braces and other work that often costs thousands and is only partly covered by extras cover.

Surgery and specialists

Gap payments, specialist fees and elective procedures in the private system.

Fertility treatment

IVF cycles and related costs, which can run across several rounds.

Eye surgery

Laser eye surgery and lens procedures that health funds often do not cover.

Hearing and mobility

Hearing aids, mobility aids and other equipment that makes day-to-day life easier.

Cosmetic procedures

Some lenders fund elective and cosmetic work. We know which ones do.

What lenders look at

Income and how stable it is

The repayment needs to fit comfortably, including any time you may take off work to recover.

Your credit file

Repayment history matters most. A thin or patchy file is not always a no, but it does change the rate.

What you already owe

Cards, car loans and buy now pay later accounts all count, including card limits you are not using.

The quote

An itemised quote from the provider shows what the money is for and helps size the loan.

Typical terms

Common ranges, not promises. Every lender sets its own policy.

  • Amount: from a few thousand dollars to $50,000 or more, depending on income.
  • Term: usually one to seven years.
  • Rate: fixed or variable, priced on your credit profile.
  • Fees: an establishment fee is common, and some loans add a monthly account fee.
  • Paying it off early: variable loans are usually flexible. Some fixed loans charge to pay out early.
  • Timing: once approved, funds are often paid within a few business days.

An example

Illustrative only. A $15,000 medical loan at an example rate of 12.50% p.a., fees not included.

Comparison rate 12.50% p.a., based on a $30,000 loan over 5 years with no fees.

WARNING: This comparison rate is true only for the examples given and may not include all fees and charges. Different terms, fees or other loan amounts might result in a different comparison rate.

TermMonthly repaymentTotal interest
2 years$710$2,031
3 years$502$3,065
5 years$337$5,248

If you will be off work while you recover, it can make sense to choose a repayment you could carry on less income, even if the term is a little longer. Many loans let you pay extra once you are back at work, so check that before you sign.

These figures are illustrative only. They are not a quote, a current rate or an offer of credit. Your rate, fees and terms depend on the lender and your circumstances.

Personal loan, payment plan or credit card?

Personal loan

One fixed amount, one repayment and a clear end date. Good for larger bills and longer treatment.

Provider payment plan

Some are interest free for a set time, but limits are often lower and late fees can be steep. Read the terms.

Credit card

Handy for smaller bills you can clear quickly. Carry a big balance and the interest adds up. See personal loan vs credit card.

What to have ready

  • Photo ID, such as a driver licence
  • Recent payslips or other proof of income
  • A few months of bank statements
  • The provider's quote, showing your out-of-pocket cost
  • What Medicare and your health fund will pay, if you know
  • A list of current debts and repayments

Medical loan questions

Can I get a loan for dental work?

Yes. A personal loan can cover dental work like implants, crowns and braces. You tell the lender what it is for and the money is paid to you to pay the dentist.

Can I use a personal loan for IVF?

Yes. Many people use a personal loan for fertility treatment. Because costs can run over several cycles, it is worth thinking about the total before choosing an amount.

Do I have to tell the lender about my condition?

No. Lenders ask what the loan is for, not for your medical details. They assess your income, expenses and credit file.

Should I use the clinic's payment plan instead?

Sometimes. If a plan is interest free and you can clear it in time, it can be cheaper. If not, a personal loan with a fixed rate and end date is often the better deal. We can compare the two.

What if my health fund pays some of it back later?

Many loans let you put a rebate or claim straight onto the balance. Some fixed loans charge for paying early, so check first.

Can I get a medical loan with bad credit?

Some lenders will look past an old default or a thin file, usually at a higher rate. See bad credit finance.

How fast can I get the money?

Once your documents are in and the loan is approved, funds often arrive within a few business days.

Will applying affect my credit score?

Comparing here does not touch your credit file. A formal application does involve a credit check, and we tell you before that happens.
