What we sort out for you

A term loan is simple on paper. The rate, the term and the security are where it gets expensive, so we compare them across the panel.

Secured or unsecured
Security over property or assets usually buys a lower rate and a longer term. Unsecured is faster but dearer.
A term to match the purpose
Short for working capital, longer for a fit-out or an acquisition. We match the term to how long the money keeps earning.
Fixed or variable
Fixed gives certainty, variable gives room to pay it off early. We explain what break costs could look like.
Weekly, fortnightly or monthly
Many business lenders take repayments weekly or even daily. We make sure the schedule fits when money comes in.
Full doc or low doc
No recent financials? Plenty of lenders assess off bank statements and BAS instead. We know which ones.
The total cost, not the headline
Establishment fees, origination and early payout costs, set out side by side so you compare like with like.

How a business term loan works

A business term loan is the most familiar kind of business borrowing. The lender advances a set amount, and the business repays it with interest over an agreed term until the balance reaches zero. Repayments are usually the same each time, so the cost is easy to plan around.

Term loans come in two broad types. Secured loans are backed by property or business assets and tend to be cheaper, with longer terms. Unsecured loans rely on the strength of the business and a director's guarantee, move faster and cost more. Which makes sense depends on the amount, the purpose and what the business is prepared to put up.

What businesses use them for

Fit-outs and refurbishments

A new shop, office or kitchen fit-out, paid off over the years it will be in use.

Expansion

A second location, bigger premises or the cost of taking on a large contract.

Buying a business

Purchasing a business or buying out a partner, often secured against property or the business itself.

Refinancing debt

Rolling expensive short-term debt into one loan with a clear end date. See refinancing.

Working capital

A one-off injection to carry the business through a known gap, such as a large order or a slow season.

Marketing and technology

Spend that cannot be resold, like a new website, software or a launch campaign, which equipment finance cannot cover.

What lenders look at

Time in business

Many lenders want at least 12 months of trading, and some specialist lenders will consider six. Under that, the options narrow sharply.

Turnover and cash flow

Lenders want to see repayments sitting comfortably inside what the business earns. Bank statements show them how money actually moves, month to month.

Purpose

A clear use for the money, with a cost that matches the loan, makes for a stronger application than a general request for cash.

Security

Property, business assets or none. Security changes the rate, the term and how much the lender will advance.

Credit history

Both the business and the directors. A recent default, or a tax debt with no payment plan in place, will narrow the panel.

Typical terms

Common ranges, not promises. Every lender sets its own policy.

  • Amount: from a few thousand dollars on smaller unsecured loans to seven figures with property security.
  • Term: unsecured loans commonly run from a few months to three or five years. Secured loans can run longer.
  • Repayments: weekly, fortnightly or monthly. Some short-term lenders debit daily, which is worth knowing before you sign.
  • Rate: fixed or variable. Unsecured rates sit well above secured ones, reflecting the extra risk the lender carries.
  • Fees: establishment or origination fees are common. Some short-term loans charge a fixed amount of interest up front, so paying early saves little.
  • Early payout: often allowed, sometimes with a break cost on a fixed rate or an exit fee. Check before you sign rather than after.

An example repayment

Illustrative only. A $100,000 business term loan, fees not included.

StructureRepaymentTotal interest
Three years, unsecured, example rate 13.50% p.a.$3,394 a month$22,167
Five years, unsecured, example rate 13.50% p.a.$2,301 a month$38,059
Three years, secured, example rate 9.50% p.a.$3,203 a month$15,319

Stretching the same loan from three years to five drops the repayment by about $1,093 a month but adds around $15,900 in interest. Putting up security saves about $6,800 in interest over three years, which is a real trade-off, because that security is on the line if things go wrong.

These figures are illustrative only. They are not a quote, a current rate or an offer of credit. Your rate, fees and terms depend on the lender, the security and your circumstances. Repayments are calculated in arrears and rounded.

Term loan, line of credit or equipment finance?

Term loan

Best for one known amount spent once. The schedule pays it off, and you know the finish date.

Line of credit

Best for money that goes out and comes back. Interest only on what you use, but the balance only falls if you pay it down. See the business line of credit.

Equipment finance

Buying a machine or vehicle? Finance secured against the asset is usually cheaper than a general term loan. See equipment finance.

What to have ready

  • ABN, company details and the directors' details
  • Six to twelve months of business bank statements
  • Recent BAS, plus financials or tax returns for larger amounts
  • What the money is for, with quotes where you have them
  • Details of any property or assets offered as security
  • A list of current business debts and their repayments

Business term loan questions

Is a term loan different from a business loan?

A term loan is one type of business loan: a set amount, a set schedule and an end date. Business loans also include lines of credit, equipment finance and invoice finance.

Can I get an unsecured business term loan?

Yes. They are common for established businesses, usually with a director's guarantee. Expect a higher rate and a shorter term than a secured loan.

How quickly can it be funded?

Smaller unsecured loans can move within a few days once the paperwork is complete. Secured loans take longer, because property needs to be valued and documents prepared.

Can I pay it off early?

Usually, but the cost varies. Variable loans tend to be the easiest to exit. Fixed loans can carry break costs, and some short-term loans charge the full interest regardless. Ask before you sign.

Should I choose weekly or monthly repayments?

Match the repayment to when money comes in. A business paid weekly by its customers often finds weekly repayments easier to carry. Some lenders only offer one option.

Can a new business get a term loan?

It is harder. Most lenders want 12 months of trading. A newer business with property behind it, or directors with a strong credit history, still has options.

Is the interest tax deductible?

Interest on money borrowed for business purposes is generally deductible. How it applies depends on your structure and what the money is used for, so check with your accountant.

Will applying affect my credit score?

Comparing here does not touch your credit file. A formal application does involve a credit check, and we tell you before that happens.

Looking at something else? See the business line of credit for money you draw as you need it, invoice and debtor finance if the gap is unpaid invoices, equipment finance for machinery and vehicles, or business loans for the full picture.

Need it on tap instead?

If the need comes and goes, a line of credit lets you draw only what you need and pay interest only on that.
