What we sort out for you

A wedding is a one-off cost with deposits due well before the day. We find a loan whose amount, term and fees fit the budget you have actually set.

One repayment for it all
Instead of deposits spread across cards, one fixed amount with one repayment you can plan the first years of marriage around.
Borrow what you planned
We size the loan to your budget, not the top limit a lender offers. It is easy to overspend once the money is sitting there.
Shorter terms cost less
Two or three years usually keeps the interest down. We show what each term costs so you can choose with your eyes open.
Applying together
Couples can apply jointly so both incomes count. Both of you are then responsible for the whole loan, so it is worth a chat first.
Deposits due early
Venues often want money months ahead. We time the application so the funds land when the first big deposit is due.
Cheaper than cards, usually
Card rates on wedding deposits add up fast. A personal loan with a fixed end date is usually the cheaper way to spread it.

How a wedding loan works

A wedding loan is a personal loan used to pay for the wedding. You borrow a fixed amount, it is paid to you in one go, and you repay it over a set term, often two to five years. Most are unsecured, so nothing you own is tied to the loan.

It works best alongside a budget, not instead of one. Many couples save what they can and borrow the gap, which keeps the loan smaller and the term shorter. Whatever you decide, the aim is to start married life with a repayment you can carry easily, not one that runs into your fifth anniversary.

What it can cover

Venue and catering

Usually the biggest line in the budget, with deposits due months before the day.

Rings

Engagement and wedding rings, bought outright rather than on a jeweller's finance plan.

What you wear

Dresses, suits, alterations, hair and makeup for the wedding party.

Photos and video

Photographers and videographers book out early and often want a deposit to hold the date.

Travel for the day

A destination wedding, or flights and accommodation for a wedding interstate or overseas.

The honeymoon

Some couples add the trip to the same loan. Others keep it separate on a holiday loan.

What lenders look at

Income and how stable it is

The repayment needs to fit comfortably after living costs, rent or mortgage and any other debts.

Your credit file

On a joint loan, both credit files are checked. A missed payment on either can affect the rate.

What you already owe

Cards, car loans and buy now pay later accounts all count, including card limits you are not using.

Applying together

A joint application lets both incomes count, but it also makes each of you responsible for the full amount.

The amount

Lenders like to see a borrowing amount that matches a sensible budget for the size of the wedding.

Typical terms

Common ranges, not promises. Every lender sets its own policy.

  • Amount: from a few thousand dollars up to $50,000 or more, depending on income.
  • Term: usually one to seven years. Two to three years is common for a wedding.
  • Rate: fixed or variable, priced on your credit profile.
  • Fees: an establishment fee is common, and some loans add a monthly account fee.
  • Paying it off early: handy if gifts or a tax refund come in after the day. Some fixed loans charge for it.
  • Timing: once approved, funds are often paid within a few business days.

An example

Illustrative only. A $20,000 wedding loan at an example rate of 12.00% p.a., fees not included.

Comparison rate 12.00% p.a., based on a $30,000 loan over 5 years with no fees.

WARNING: This comparison rate is true only for the examples given and may not include all fees and charges. Different terms, fees or other loan amounts might result in a different comparison rate.

TermMonthly repaymentTotal interest
2 years$941$2,595
3 years$664$3,914
5 years$445$6,693

Five years brings the repayment under $450 a month, but it costs about $4,100 more in interest than paying it off over two years, and you would still be paying for the wedding heading into your fifth anniversary. If the budget allows, shorter is cheaper.

These figures are illustrative only. They are not a quote, a current rate or an offer of credit. Your rate, fees and terms depend on the lender and your circumstances.

Wedding loan, credit card or saving first?

Wedding loan

One fixed amount, one repayment and a clear end date. Good for covering deposits that fall due before the day.

Credit card

Fine for small deposits you can clear quickly. Carry a big balance and the interest adds up fast. See personal loan vs credit card.

Save first, borrow the gap

Paying part from savings keeps the loan smaller and the term shorter. Often the cheapest mix of all.

What to have ready

  • Photo ID for each person applying
  • Recent payslips or other proof of income for each applicant
  • A few months of bank statements
  • Your wedding budget and any quotes you have
  • A list of current debts and repayments
  • The dates your big deposits are due

Wedding loan questions

Is a wedding loan different from a personal loan?

Not really. A wedding loan is a personal loan used for a wedding. The rates, fees and terms work the same way, which is why it pays to compare.

Can we apply together?

Yes. A joint application lets both incomes count, which can help with the amount and the rate. Both of you are then responsible for the whole loan, not half each.

How much should we borrow?

Only what the budget needs after any savings. A smaller loan over a shorter term costs less, and it leaves room for the costs that pop up in the last few weeks.

Can we include the honeymoon?

Yes. Some couples add it to the same loan. Others keep it separate so the wedding can be paid off first.

What if the wedding is postponed or cancelled?

The loan still needs to be repaid. It is worth checking each supplier's refund and transfer terms before you pay a deposit.

Can we pay it off early?

Many loans let you pay extra or clear the balance early, which is handy if gifts or a tax refund come in. Some fixed loans charge for it, so check first.

Will it affect buying a home later?

A home loan lender counts your current repayments when working out what you can borrow. Clearing the wedding loan before you apply usually helps.

Will applying affect my credit score?

Comparing here does not touch your credit file. A formal application does involve a credit check, and we tell you before that happens.
