Refinancing Without the Loyalty Tax

The rate you signed two years ago isn't the rate on offer today. We compare what you're paying now against what the panel will actually do, and tell you straight if moving is worth it.

What we sort out for you

Car, equipment, truck or business debt. If it has a repayment attached to it, it can usually be refinanced. The two things that matter are what the payout figure looks like today and whether the savings survive the exit fees. We work both out before you commit to anything.

When refinancing is worth it

Refinancing means replacing the loan you have now with a new one, usually to get a lower rate, a lower repayment or better terms. The new lender pays out the old loan and you carry on with the new one. It works for car loans, equipment and business finance as well as home loans.

It isn't always the right move. Exit fees, new establishment fees and a longer term can wipe out the saving from a lower rate. So we run what you're paying now against what the panel will do today, fees included, and tell you straight if it doesn't stack up.

Good reasons to refinance

Your credit has improved

If you took the loan with a patchy credit history or a new job, and you've made every repayment on time since, you may now qualify for a sharper rate than the one you were given.

The market has moved

The rate you signed up to reflects the market on that day. If rates have moved, or you were on a rate that was never competitive, the gap can be worth closing.

A balloon is coming due

If a balloon payment is about to land and you'd rather not pay it in one hit, refinancing it over a new term is common. Our guide to balloon payments explains the options.

You want one repayment instead of several

Rolling a car loan, a personal loan and credit cards into one repayment can cut the interest you pay and make life simpler. See debt consolidation.

What to check before you switch

Exit and break fees

Fixed rate loans often charge a fee for paying out early. We find out what yours is first, because it decides whether the switch is worth it.

Fees on the new loan

Establishment fees, monthly fees and any valuation or security fees. A lower rate with higher fees can still cost more overall.

The term

Stretching a loan over a longer term drops the repayment but can add interest. We show you the total cost both ways, not just the monthly figure.

How refinancing works with us

1. Tell us what you have now

The lender, the balance, the rate and roughly how long is left. A recent statement is the quickest way.

2. We compare the panel

We look at what lenders on the panel will do for you today, with fees and exit costs worked in.

3. You decide

If there's a real saving, we handle the application and the payout of the old loan. If there isn't, we'll say so.

Refinancing questions

Will refinancing hurt my credit score?

Applying for a new loan adds an enquiry to your credit file, which is why we compare first and apply once. One well-chosen application has far less effect than several at once.

Can I refinance a car loan?

Yes. Car loans are one of the most common loans we refinance, particularly where the rate was set at the dealership or your credit has improved since. See car loans.

Can I refinance a home loan?

Yes. It involves a valuation and more paperwork than a car loan, and it's worth checking break costs if you're on a fixed rate. See home loans and our guide to fixed vs variable rates.

Can I refinance if I've missed payments?

Possibly. Recent missed payments narrow the options, but some lenders will look at the reasons and your record since. Be upfront and we'll tell you what's realistic.

How long does it take?

A car or equipment refinance can be done within days once the payout figure is in. Home loans take longer because of the valuation and settlement process.

Is there a cost to refinance?

Comparing with us is free. Your current lender may charge exit or break fees, and the new lender may charge establishment fees. We show you every one of them before you decide.
